Sims 3 Missing Ghost?

the only thing i can think of that would cause this is if some one sent them back to the netherworld. thats the only thing i know of that would send a ghost away and make a tombstone disappear. sadly there is no way to get them back. but you could always kill off another sim. that always cheers people up.
