Is it hard to drive a train?

Do they have some type of apprentice program? My cousin spent many long hours and years working his way up from track and signal maintenance to locomotive engineer. After retiring from the US Navy as a prime mover mechanic, I submitted resumes to many Cl 1 and 2 rail companies, only to be turned down, Keep after it and take some courses in prime mover repair.
