Why can't elephants survive without tusks?

Is it just that ivory is easier to access when the animal is dead, or is the elephant killed by the loss of tusks? I understand that tusks are used for protection and hierarchy, but are they essential for life, or can an elephant be rescued after their tusks are gone?
